The Summer School ended today and the conference begins tomorrow. Because Germany played in the Euro 2008 tournament, the ZEW projected the game onto the big screen in the conference room and provided beer. Lots of fun, but too bad Germany lost to Croatia.

- Short Bio - Michael R. Ward earned his bachelors degree is in Economics and Mathematics from UCLA and he earned his masters and doctorate degrees in Economics from the University of Chicago. He has held economics positions in the academic, government and private sectors. He is currently an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Texas at Arlington. He previously held Assistant and Associate Professor positions at the University of Illinois and has served as a staff economist at the Federal Trade Commission. Prof. Ward’s research interests are in competition and productivity in research intensive industries, especially telecommunications, E-commerce and pharmaceuticals. Of particular interest are: market regulation and policy and institutions to facilitate information transfer. His research has been published in a number of economics journals, edited volumes, and government reports. He has made research presentations at numerous government agencies and scholarly conferences. He has taught a variety of microeconomic topics at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels.

If Germany wins the next game, it would set up a cracker of a game against Portugal in the quarters.. it will def be crazy in Germany.

Last night was crazy. Turkey came back from two goals to nil to win three-two in the closing minutes. There are plenty of Turks in Mannheim and they celebrate a bit more loudly that your typical German.
During the tournament, there are two games every evening. Many of the cafes have set up projection screens and huge crowds hang out, drink beer, eat, drink more beer. At my apartment, when there is a shot on goal, I can hear the whole city cheer. When it is successful, the city roars. The Turks won last night just before 11:00 last night and there was cheering, yelling and honking until after midnight.
